The Holiday Season

We got pretty into the Holiday Season this year at school. Here are a few pictures with blurbs, but know that this is not nearly all of the activities that went on, holiday related.

I hope everyone did well with their finals, and that you all are getting home safely! Happy Holidays!

Thanksgiving 2012

Sorry this post is really late- end of semester and finals week are in full swing so I've been super busy. But here are a few pictures of my time in Houlton with Anna for Thanksgiving this year:

Aroostook County Solar System

Over Thanksgiving, I went to Anna's house up in Houlton, ME, a.k.a. Canada. But, one cool thing about Aroostook County is their model solar system. A professor at University of Maine at Presque Isle (UMPI) designed a to-scale model of the solar system- each planet is the size it would be in relation to the others, and is exactly the distance it would be from the sun (in this case, one AU equaled 1 mile). And so, Anna and I drove to all the planets and took pictures. Duh.

The cross-section of the Sun.

Mercury

Venus.

Earth and the moon.

Mars

Jupiter

Saturn

Uranus

Neptune.

Little baby Pluto.

So, if you're ever up in The County, drive up Route 1 and find all the planets. It's a pretty fun challenge!

We Grew Up At Midnight

This year, I have challenged myself to do something each month that is 100% out of my comfort zone, and so far it's been going really well! One of the things I did was dance in a student choreographed dance piece (called We Grew Up At Midnight), that we performed on Friday and Saturday night, and it was SO much fun. I loved working with these girls all semester, and am a little bit bummed out that it's over! It's also cool that I was exposed to so many new things I normally would not have experienced at Colby (backstage Runnals? When would I have ever been there?). Anyways, here are a few pictures of the experience:

These goofy kids came to see the performance!

It was such a fun experience! I hope to do it again next semester. We will see.

'Tis The Season

I was feeling a little crafty last weekend so this is what I did:

It's a Christmas Countdown Chain! I have three categories: red is something I love or appreciate (concrete), green is something I love or appreciate (abstract), and blue is a small act of kindness that I have challenged myself to do that day.

These are all of the "items" lined up.

So, I will cut one off of the chain (they were put into the chain in a random order) each day, as a countdown to Christmas. I'm hoping that it will bring me a little bit of happiness and gratitude in this season that is so marred by consumerism and greed. I'm dorky, I know, but I want this chain to remind me that there are a lot of big, important things that may be forgotten in the stress of finals and end-of-semester drama.

I'll let you know how it goes.
